Pomfret fish curry is a beloved dish that hails from the coastal area of South Gujarat, celebrated for its rich flavors and comforting qualities. This dish masterfully combines the creamy texture of pomfret with a blend of aromatic spices, creating a delightful curry that seafood lovers adore. At Kansar Recipe, we cherish this traditional recipe, which has been passed down through generations, as it not only reflects our culinary heritage but also brings families together around the dining table.

The South Gujarat version of pomfret fish curry stands out from other regional interpretations, such as the Bengali and Goan styles. While Bengali recipes often emphasize mustard oil and a tangy tomato base, and Goan versions incorporate coconut milk and tamarind for a sweeter profile, our recipe showcases the unique spices and flavors characteristic of South Gujarat. We start by preparing a flavorful masala with coriander powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, turmeric, garlic paste, and green chili paste, which infuses the fish with a rich taste that is both comforting and satisfying.

At Kansar Recipe, we take pride in the meticulous preparation of this dish. We begin by making evenly spaced cuts on the cleaned pomfret to allow the masala to penetrate deeply into the fish. Cooking it in a well-oiled pan enhances the flavors as the spices meld together while simmering. The process is not just about cooking; it’s about creating an experience that connects us to our roots. The aroma that fills our kitchen while the curry simmers evokes memories of family gatherings and festive celebrations.

Once cooked, we garnish our pomfret fish curry with fresh coriander leaves and serve it with a squeeze of lime juice alongside traditional accompaniments like juwar bhakri or rotla. This combination not only enhances the flavors but also pays homage to our cultural heritage. We believe that sharing this dish with loved ones creates lasting memories and fosters a sense of community.

We invite you to try your hand at making this irresistible pomfret fish curry in your own kitchen. At Kansar Recipe, we are excited to share this piece of our culinary tradition with you and hope it brings as much joy to your table as it does to ours. Experience the warmth and flavor of South Gujarat through this delightful dish that celebrates both tradition and togetherness!

Servings 2 people
Total Time 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 pomfrets cleaned
  • 5 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp kashmiri red chili powder
  • ¾ tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 ½ tbsp garlic paste
  • ½ tbsp green chili paste
  • 5 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 ½ tbsp juwar flour
  • lime juice to taste
  • salt to taste
  • fresh coriander leaves for garnishing
  • fresh green garlic for garnishing

Instructions

Prepare the Fish

  • Start by taking the cleaned 2 pomfrets and making three evenly spaced cuts on each side. This helps the flavors penetrate the fish.
  • In a small bowl, combine the following ingredients to create your spice mix: 5 tbsp coriander powder, 2 tbsp kashmiri red chili powder, ¾ tsp turmeric powder, 1 ½ tbsp garlic paste, ½ tbsp green chili paste and salt to taste
  • In a large pan, heat about 5 tbsp cooking oil over medium flame. Once the oil is hot, add the prepared masala to the pan. Sauté for a few minutes until fragrant. Then, add 1 ½ tbsp juwar flour and mix well. Adjust the flavor with lime juice as needed.

Cook the Fish

  • Carefully place the pomfret fish into the pan. Cook one side for about one minute before flipping it over. Add water according to your desired curry consistency.
  • Allow the curry to come to a boil. Once boiling, cover the pan with a lid and let it cook on medium flame for about 10 minutes. After this time, carefully flip the fish again, cover, and cook for an additional 2 minutes on low flame. Check if the fish is fully cooked by gently slicing it with a fork.

Garnish and Serve

  • Once cooked, turn off the flame and garnish your pomfret fish curry with chopped fresh coriander leaves and fresh green garlic. Serve hot with freshly squeezed lime juice alongside juwar bhakri or rotla for a complete meal.
