Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • ½ cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
  • ¼ chopped onion
  • ¼ diced potato
  • 1 chopped medium-sized tomato
  • 1 tbsp ghee (or oil)
  • ½ tbsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tbsp grated ginger
  • ½ tbsp minced garlic
  • ½ tsp turmeric powder
  • ½ tsp green chili paste
  • 1 tsp kashmiri red chili powder
  • salt
  • fresh coriander leaves (for garnish)
  • green chilies (for garnish)

Instructions

Prepare the Dal

  • Start by washing and rinsing ½ cup toor dal thoroughly. In a pressure cooker, combine the rinsed dal with ¼ chopped onion, ¼ diced potato, and 1 chopped medium-sized tomato. Add enough water to cover the ingredients and cook under pressure for about 5 to 7 minutes until the dal is soft.
  • Once cooked, release the pressure and carefully mix the boiled dal and vegetables until you achieve a smooth consistency.

Prepare Spices

  • In a separate pot, heat 1 tbsp ghee over medium heat. Add ½ tbsp cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds. Then, stir in 1 tbsp grated ginger, ½ tbsp minced garlic, ½ tsp turmeric powder, ½ tsp green chili paste, and 1 tsp kashmiri red chili powder. Cook for a minute until fragrant.

Combine and Simmer

  • Add the prepared dal mixture to the pot with the spices. Stir well to combine and simmer on low heat. If the dal is too thick, add water gradually until you reach your desired consistency. Season with salt to taste.
  • Once done, remove from heat and garnish your Masala Dal with fresh coriander leaves and sliced green chilies. Serve hot with rice for a comforting meal.
  • Enjoy this delicious Masala Dal that brings warmth and flavor to your table!
